Wine-tasting in
South America
South American wines are becoming increasingly well known for their
excellent quality at affordable prices. Because the vines have
managed to avoid the phylloxera insect, grape stock rooted in South
America soil is often older and more established than that found in
Europe! In BYOC:
South America! A Family Sabbatical Handbook, we describe
the highlights of the most famous wineries of South America, as well as
some hidden gems off the beaten path. You will read in detail the
offerings of several wineries, ranging from small family-run vineyards
to large, state-of-the-art enterprises, with enough options to please
any palate. Learn why wine-tasting is much easier in Argentina
than in Chile. Start your journey by tasting some ice cream
flavored with Cabernet and Torrontes grapes fresh from the
vineyard! Ride with us on our three-seated bicycle through the
hills of Cafayate, a tiny town with a laid-back holiday
lifestyle. Discover the legend of the Casillero del Diablo,
the cellar in the bowels of Concha y Toro Winery, the largest wine
exporter in South America. And as always, find out how to get the
most for your U.S. dollars along with way.
If you enjoy wines, or would like to learn more, get your copy of BYOC:
South America! A Family Sabbatical Handbook and let us
help you get started on your adventure today!

Bring your
children wine-tasting?
Absolutely!
Fran and I
planned trips to specific wineries of
potential interest to children due to the location of a museum or some
other special on-site
attraction. We also allowed him ample time to observe anything
that caught his
eye or to simply run around. Christopher particularly
enjoyed watching workers harvest the grapes, and the large machines
that extracted and processed the juice. Besides sampling the
grapes straight off the vine, snacks and treats are often available to
tempt young palates. Don't forget to bring some form of
entertainment (a good book, electronics, or coloring pages) in case
your tour or tasting room visit exceeds your child's patience!
Teaching children about the importance of drinking responsibly can also
establish healthy patterns for future years. |
